La Canada Flintridge Outlook

By Katie Williams

Celine Aenlle-Rocha, Terese Rutkowski, Mimi Spindle and Katie Williams of Girl Scout Troop 739 donated books and homemade “books on tape” to the Union Station Family Center in Pasadena as part of their Silver Award project.

Troop 739 delivered 15 sets of donated books and recordings for children, including “Green Eggs and Ham,” “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” “Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia” and “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” Additionally, more than 100 books and three new CD players were donated.

The project took the troop five months to plan.

“This will be such a great tool for the children to learn to read,” said Rochelle Sisco, Union Station Foundation’s childcare specialist. “The boom boxes complete the project so they can follow along. These books and books-on-tape will definitely make a difference in these children’s lives. It is so wonderful to see girls giving back to the community and helping the homeless. We started using them the day we got them.”

Donations of books were made by community members and book stores such as Vroman’s in Pasadena, La Canada Books and Toys in La Canada Flintridge, Borders in Glendale, Once Upon a Time in Montrose, and Tom’s Toys in Montrose. Vroman’s in Pasadena included the project in its monthly newsletter.
