Changing the Narrative Series:  Does Housing Really End Homelessness?

Pasadena, CA August 31, 2020 – The second webinar in the Changing the Narrative Series: Does Housing Really End Homelessness features Dr. Sam Tsemberis, the internationally recognized pioneer of the groundbreaking Housing First philosophy.  The webinar series is brought to you by Union Station Homeless Services and will be held on September 30, from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

A sought-after speaker, Tsemberis is recognized internationally for his commitment and advocacy to ending homelessness for people with mental illness and addiction. He will hold an interactive conversation with panelists and viewers on why housing is the key to healthier people, happier communities and decreased homelessness.

Discussion points will range from what is it like to experience the Housing First model when looking to get off the streets to addressing if the model is replicable across the San Gabriel Valley and the U.S.

Union Station Homeless Services Announces New Board Members and Officers

Union Station Homeless Services announced today the organization’s new
Board of Directors Officers effective July 1, 2020 and the election of five new members since the last
officer installation. Serving as Chair will be Kevin Trieber, Senior Vice President, Bank of America, with
Maxine Harris, Vice President and Senior Trust Officer, Bank of the West, continuing her role as Vice
Chair. Eric “Tony” Gronroos, CPA, Hinton, Kreditor & Gronroos, LLP, has been installed as Treasurer
while Jesse Torres, Principal, ArroyoWest, LLC, will serve as Secretary.
New Board Members elected since the last Officer installation include:

  • Vinayak Bharne, Adjunct Associate Professor, USC School of Architecture
  • Lori Bondar, VP, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer at Avery Dennison
  • Angela Serranzana, Hackler Flynn and Associates
  • Lisa Smith, Manager Director/Public Finance Group MUFG
  • Jay Walters, Chief Information Officer and Vice President, Ellen McDonald MD, Inc.

The stature and experience of the new Board of Directors is remarkable,” states Anne Miskey, CEO
Union Station Homeless Services. “We are looking forward to the Board’s contribution to help us
navigate these difficult times and continue our mission to end homelessness and rebuild lives in the San
Gabriel Valley.”

Rotating off the Board after years of service and commitment to the organization are Rob Levy, Arnie
Sigel, Cathy Simms, Jim McCarthy and Brittany Duke-Noblin.

Union Station to Host Webinar on Systemic Racism and the Housing Crisis in San Gabriel Valley

 

The housing crisis in the San Gabriel Valley is the result of decades of broken and racist systems — housing discrimination, income inequality, disparities in the justice system, generational poverty and lack of access to opportunity — have led the area to this unacceptable truth: Black people are four times more likely to experience homelessness than other groups. 

The country is finally having vital conversations but how do we go beyond talk and take action for real change? How can we make a difference in the San Gabriel Valley?

Join Union Station Homeless Services for the inaugural webinar of Changing the Narrative Series: Systemic Racism and the Housing Crisis to be held on Tuesday, July 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Zoom and Facebook Live.

  • Dominick Correy, district representative, SenatorAnthony J. Portantino for the Pasadena and Altadena region. 
  • Veronica Gentry, chair, Union Station Black Diversity Network and member of the Multidisciplinary Outreach Teamteam dedicated to working with the highest utilizers of emergency services among the homeless population of San Gabriel Valley.
