On Sunday, February 25, Tangles Hair Salon in Pasadena hosted a “Cut-A-Thon,” a unique fundraising event that benefited Union Station Foundation. Tangles, an upscale salon located in Old Pasadena, offered $30 haircuts and styles to men and women throughout the day (regularly $40 – $60), in addition to providing door prizes and refreshments. Each of the salon’s twelve stylists, their massage therapist and manicurist participated in this event, in which 100% of the day’s proceeds were donated to Union Station.

Mindy Stein is the Vice President of Union Station’s Board of Directors, and has made it a personal obligation to look for creative ways of raising money to support the agency’s programs. During Mindy’s recent hair cut at Tangles with her stylist and salon owner David Gex, they discussed the various volunteer opportunities at Union Station and the beneficial services that the agency provides. “I have been interested in doing a fundraiser like this for a long time,” said Gex. “Over the years, I have volunteered at agencies downtown, but I wanted a local organization to benefit from this event.”

Sylvia Gex, David’s wife and co-owner of the salon said, “after visiting Union Station on an extremely eye-opening tour, I feel confident knowing that the money raised from this event will be spent assisting the homeless and the poor to better their lives.”

Union Station Foundation is the San Gabriel Valley’s largest private agency serving the poor and homeless, providing more than 115,000 meals and nearly 21,000 nights of shelter per year.

In addition, Union Station provides multiple supportive services including career development and job placement, community healthcare, case management services, 12-step meetings, legal assistance, transitional housing and special programs for homeless families. More than 70% of Union Station clients have found stable housing after their stay with the agency.

“This was a unique event that gave people the opportunity to support Union Station financially and get their hair professionally cut and styled,” said Marvin Gross, Executive Director of Union Station. “We are grateful to Tangles Salon for hosting this event, and to the community who came out in spite of the stormy weather to support Tangles and Union Station.”
